Learning a little about proper recovery after workout can help you to nurture what your body needs during this crucial time. Here’s a little about how it works and how you can support your fatigued muscles as they heal from exercise or other strenuous activities.

What Is Meant by Muscle Recovery?

You will hear this term muscle recovery a lot in the fitness industry and it’s not just a selling point. This refers to a physiological process in your body and one that is critical if you want to lose weight, gain muscle, or reach other health and fitness goals like improved endurance, speed, and agility.

Much like your skin produces more collagen in response to micro-abrasions, thereby looking younger and more polished, your muscles also have a reparative process of healing, which produces more muscle mass and muscle tone. This is your body’s natural way of preparing itself for the activities in your life and making sure you are fit and strong enough to do them.

  • Time. Light activities that give your muscles some time to heal. (Walking or stretching, for example.)

  • High quality proteins in your diet. Examples would be milk, yogurt, eggs, cheese, lean meats and fish.
  • Healthy carbs. Examples would be sweet potatoes, fresh fruit, oatmeal, whole grain pasta or bread.
