Preparing Yourself for Your Best Workout
Many people report having to “psyche themselves up” before a workout. This may begin at home when you are simply trying to get your head together, find your motivation, and strap those tennis shoes on. Working out is a lot of fun for some folks – but for many people working out isn’t our favorite thing to do. We do it because we want the health and wellness benefits of working out. We want our bodies to be healthy and strong, and to hopefully extend our length and quality of life.
Whichever camp you fall into, preparing yourself for a great workout is both a mental and physical game. Let’s talk about how to prepare yourself inside and out for a great workout each and every time.
Mental Preparedness for Your Workout
- Practice positive self-talk
- Take control over when, how and where you will do your workout.
- Remind yourself that you will feel better after you workout.
- Plan for music that uplifts you and carries you through your workout routine.
- Consider healthy rewards for yourself after you complete your workout routine.
- Look for inspiration – pictures of yourself looking healthier, mantras that help to get you going, or written goals for your work out successes.
Physical Preparedness for Your Workout
- Before beginning any new workout regimen, talk with your doctor.
- Set workout goals, both short and long-term.
- Hydrate
- Dress appropriately for your workout.
- Do gentle stretching and warm-up exercises to prepare your muscles for the work they are about to do.
- Consider pre-workout foods, supplements, or taking CBD before your workout to prepare your body and mind.
CBD Benefits – Taking CBD Before Your Workout
It might seem a bit strange to talk about cannabis and hemp derivatives as a way to enhance your workout routine. So first, let’s talk a bit about CBD benefits, what that might do for you, and how this applies to your workout strategy.
Benefits of CBD
People take CBD products for a host of reasons. Because our bodies are equipped with a natural, biological system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) we know that CBD is processed and used by the body. While yes, the research is a bit thin on the uses, benefits, and applications for CBD, we do have anecdotal evidence based on years of use for a variety of purposes.
Pre-CBD regimen considerations:
- Research the product – thoroughly.
- Talk to your doctor about CBD use.
- Read the reviews on any product you are considering.
- Talk with other people you trust about their experiences using CBD products.
You are likely to find there’s a wide spectrum of opinions, some quite strong, on what CBD does and does not do for our minds and bodies. So, how to sort all this out? I, again, refer you to the list above. Until science and research can better answer our questions, this is what we have to go on. Having said that, the anecdotal evidence is quite strong. People take CBD for some of the following purposes and goals:
- To achieve improved general health and wellness
- To help them deal with daily stress and restlessness
- As part of an overall pain-management program
- To help with sleep and rest
- To generally feel better
- To help reach targeted physical goals
Benefits of Using Full Spectrum CBD
When we discuss CBD, you should know that there are two very distinct types and each has their own usefulness. Which is best for you? The answer relies on your good intuition, self-awareness, understanding your own body and mind, and, of course, that all-so-important conversation with your doctor.
Full Spectrum CBD
While both Broad Spectrum CBD and Full Spectrum CBD come from the same plant source, they are different by how they include THC. The 2018 Farm Bill permits 0.3% of THC in any CBD product and no more. So, while the Full Spectrum CBD has THC and Broad Spectrum does not , the Full Spectrum CBD intentionally includes up to 0.3%, the amount permitted by law.
So, what’s the difference? Why does the THC content matter?
First of all, yes, THC is the part of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa, which has a psychogenic effect, which in higher quantities gives you that “high” feeling associated with marijuana. When sourcing and creating hemp derived CBD products, at these lower levels of THC, many people find the influence to be more along the lines of improved relaxation both mentally and physically. Some even say the minimal THC can help to boost athletic performance, though the scientific jury is still out on that. We’ve even covered, right here in our blog, how THC could influence your performance in running, specifically in long-form running events such as marathons.
Secondly, the added influence of THC may help some people to feel more calm, which is attractive to certain personality types, behavioral traits, and patterns of brain function. You know how your mind works and you can determine for yourself if you think you may need the added potential benefit from 0.3 % THC in your CBD formula.
Both Full and Broad Spectrum CBD formulations offer the benefits of CBD for your health and wellness. You can choose between the two based on whether or not you want the THC included in your formula. For those worried about THC being in their system at all, for competitive athletic purposes or for employment, note that the Broad Spectrum CBD is less likely to throw a positive test, but it does also depend on the type and sensitivity of the testing methods. Your doctor can explain more about this for you.
What Kind of CBD to take Before You Workout
So, given the two different types and many different forms of CBD, which is best to use before your workout? There are many options and methods for using CBD before you strap on those running shoes. What you find works best for you is ultimately the right answer. But if you are new to CBD, you may need a little information to get started. We’ll go over a few options here to help you decide what is best for you pre workout.
Choosing the Right CBD Pre Workout Product
Most CBD before your workout will be in the form of CBD tinctures, which are CBD drops you’ll place under your tongue, hold for 30 seconds, and swallow. It is generally taken at the same amount, twice a day – morning and night. For pre workout, you may consider taking an additional serving or half-serving 30 minutes to an hour before your workout.
- Choose between Broad Spectrum CBD and Full Spectrum CBD
- Choose a CBD strength based on your size and body composition.
- Begin with a serving size recommended by the manufacturer (or doctor) and you can make adjustments to the serving size after your body has a few weeks to get used to the product.
CBD Pre Workout Routine
In addition to your pre workout activities, here are three methods of adding CBD into your pre workout plan of action.
CBD Before Your Workout – In addition to your regular CBD routine
As briefly outlined above, you may take CBD as a pre workout as a part of your regular CBD regimen. This option is best for people who take CBD regularly and want to provide more CBD right before a workout. It is common for CBD users to add extra CBD before situations or activities when they know they may need a little extra “help.” This method means you will continue your morning and night CBD regimen as usual but add in an extra serving 30 minutes to an hour before your workout. If you workout each morning right after you normally take your CBD, you may opt to up your serving size by ¼ to ½ of your regular serving size and do this only for the mornings you head straight into a workout.
CBD Before Your Workout – As a Micro Serving
For those that work out during the day, you can take what is called a micro-serving. (Some call it a micro-dose, but we generally stay away from “dosing” language as that sounds far too drug-oriented for our taste.) For a micro-serving, this simply means you take an extra serving of CBD. The amount you take should be consistent before workouts. Here are a few options:
- Take ¼ serving of your regular CBD tincture 30 minutes-1 hour before a workout.
- Take ½ serving of your regular CBD tincture 30 minutes-1 hour before a workout.
- Take ¾ serving of your regular CBD tincture 30 minutes-1 hour before a workout.
- Take a full serving of your regular CBD tincture 30 minutes-1 hour before a workout.
CBD Before Your Workout – As a CBD Form to Add THC
Another common method of CBD before your workout could mean that you want the THC for your workout, but not necessarily for the rest of the time. This means you’ll take a serving of Broad Spectrum CBD for your morning and evening but take an additional micro serving of CBD with THC, before your workout. You’d have to keep both Broad Spectrum CBD and Full Spectrum CBD on hand for this routine, but many find it beneficial.
You can, again, decide how much you want to take before your workout sessions, and after you have tried one serving size for a series of workouts you can adjust the amounts or your method of taking CBD before your workout so that you can get the desired results. It helps to keep a journal or log of your workouts with a few thoughts and observations on how the CBD is working with your workout performance. Make sure to also note how you feel after your workout. Remember that CBD builds up in your system over time. If you need to reduce the amounts you are taking, this is fine too.
