Tips on Using CBD for Weight Loss

It’s one of the oldest clichés in the book: When you get high, you get the munchies. And when you get the munchies, you splurge on junk food consumption and unrepentant snacking.

Because of this cliché, a lot of people overlook the possibility that certain hemp-derived products, including CBD, could potentially be useful for losing weight. So, let’s start by stating the obvious: Taking CBD doesn’t get you high, which means you’re not going to be overtaken by the munchies. And while there hasn’t been a ton of research into CBD as a weight loss implement, there are some tantalizing studies that suggest just maybe a CBD product could aid you in curbing your appetite, and ultimately in achieving a slimmer figure.

CBD and Weight Loss: What Does the Research Say?

So, about those studies. Scientists haven’t been able to get a clear grasp on CBD and its possible weight loss potential, at least in humans. What we can say is that, according to some studies, regular cannabis users actually have a lower body mass index (BMI) than the average.

There are also some promising studies regarding the effects of CBD on rats, mice, and other animals. For instance, one study confirms that CBD has a desirable effect on both lipid and glucose metabolism, both of which are essential for maintaining a healthy body weight. Indeed, numerous studies have indicated that CBD can curb rodent appetites, leading researchers to speculate that the same may be true in humans.

And that’s not all. Many proponents of CBD claim that, among its many effects on the body, it can turn white fat (which is the bad kind) into brown fat (which is comparatively healthy). In doing so, these CBD advocates say that the hemp product may be useful not only in helping the body burn calories, but also in potentially creating safeguards against heart disease and related conditions.

Again, there’s not a huge body of research to confirm this, though what research there is seems promising. For example, one 2016 study suggests that CBD may have a big impact on the way the body interacts with fat.

What’s the Connection Between CBD and Weight Loss?

Now, you might wonder: How exactly would CBD impact appetite or body weight? The short answer: It has everything to do with the endocannabinoid system, which is basically a signaling network inside your body. The endocannabinoid system regulates a number of important functions, including both your appetite and your metabolism.

CBD can interact with your endocannabinoid receptors in a number of ways. The right CBD formulation may essentially serve as a “brake” for your appetite, making you less keen on snacking or overindulging while also ensuring your metabolism is firing on all cylinders.

Using CBD for Weight Loss

With all of that said, how should you approach CBD, specifically as a tool for weight loss?

There are not any formal or FDA-approved guidelines for using CBD for weight loss. What this means is that there is no official verdict on which type of CBD product to use, nor what kind of dosage is recommended.

Our advice? First of all, always start with research. Check out different CBD products to see if they have any reported weight loss or appetite suppressant effects. Also take some time to study up on the potential side effects of CBD; these are generally very mild, but still worth knowing about. Finally, be advised that many doctors say CBD is risky when mixed with particular medications, especially blood thinners.

Beyond that, we would recommend starting with smaller dosages, potentially working your way up if you so desire. And don’t hesitate to try a few different CBD products until you come across one that seems to meet your needs.
