Does CBD Oil Dehydrate You? What You Need to Know

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a recent entrant to the consciousness of mainstream consumers—therefore, there tends to be some confusion and misinformation present regarding its impact and affects on the body. Here at Asé Pure Naturals, our team is passionate about education and ensuring consumers have the right and most up-to-date information as they make decisions regarding CBD oil and other products.

In this blog post, we will tackle the question of whether or not CBD oil poses the risk of becoming dehydrating—and hopefully set your mind at ease.

CBD & Your Body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

Some of the mystery surrounding CBD oil is because most people aren’t all together sure how it affects their body. So, let’s clear that up.

Firstly, every person’s body has an endocannabinoid system, which plays a key role in how many bodily processes are regulated, which includes mood, pain tolerance, sleep cycle, sexual function, immune response, and much more.

In order for the ECS to remain in balance—also called homeostasis—the body must produce cannabinoids naturally that interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors, which exist in the nervous, digestive, and other systems in the body.

However, the majority of people fail to naturally produce enough cannabinoids for the ECS to do the job it is meant to do, which leads to varied ailments emerging, including chronic pain, digestive disorders, insomnia, mood swings, etc.

With all of this in mind, CBD is a natural cannabinoid that can ultimately offer a body that has an out-of-whack ECS what it needs to attain balance.

But Does CBD Lead to Dehydration?

Ultimately, one of the most common misconceptions regarding CBD is that it can dehydrate the body. The reason behind this is because CBD is associated with cannabis. Now, a helpful reminder here: Cannabis is a family of plants, which includes both hemp and marijuana. The latter is a psychoactive drug and contains high levels of THC.  As such, it is that compound—THC—that is responsible for causing “cottonmouth” after consumption.

On the other hand, CBD is derived from the hemp plant, widely recognized as the marijuana plant’s cousin. Hemp, unlike marijuana, contains no more than 0.3% THC. This means that the chances of experiencing a dry mouth, i.e., cottonmouth, after consuming CBD oil is highly unlikely.

Now, in relation to the ECS system specifically, the reason why you may experience some level of dehydration after you use CBD oil is because there are CB1 and CB2 receptors within the salivary glands. When you take CBD, these glands are subdued because your whole body feels more relaxed and the ECS is activated.

Therefore, dehydration that may be blamed on CBD oil consumption is really related to a person not paying attention to their water intake throughout the day because the ECS is in balance, and they feel healthy and well.

Make it a Point to Drink Water When Taking CBD Oil

So, the worry over whether CBD causes dehydration is actually an easy-to-bust myth. Simply make a determined and calculated effort to monitor your water intake—not only when you use CBD oil but all other times as well. Look to avoid substances like alcohol, caffeine, salty foods, and sugary foods when you use CBD oil and when you do not. Also, be aware that cigarettes can also cause dehydration.

Remember our bodies require hydration and in order to achieve whole body health and wellness when using CBD oil, it is necessary to remain alert regarding how much water one is consuming each day. By paying special heed to drinking plenty of water, you are sure to experience all of the benefits that come with using CBD oil daily.
