Does CBD Oil Need to Be Refrigerated?

Depending on who you talk to, you might hear different solutions for keeping CBD oil safe and fresh. Some enthusiasts will tell you that you just need to store your CBD oil in a cool, dark place. Others will actually advocate for refrigerating it. And still others will go as far as to say that, if you don’t plan on using your CBD oil right away, you’re better off freezing it.

So, what’s the real story? How can you properly store your CBD in a way that maximizes its shelf life? Let’s investigate.

Should You Refrigerate CBD?

Make no mistake: The way you store your CBD can have a major impact on its longevity and freshness. For starters, you should always protect your CBD oils from exposure to the sun and the air. These two factors can cause the contents of your CBD oil, including the cannabinoids and terpenes, to degrade prematurely, compromising the integrity of the product.

But beyond protecting your CBD from the sun and from the air, do you really need to keep it in the fridge? Not necessarily.

The important thing to keep in mind here is that the shelf life of most CBD oils is around two years. So, if you buy huge quantities of CBD oil in bulk, and plan on saving some for use in a year’s time, you should probably make some space in the refrigerator.

But if you buy smaller quantities of CBD, using and then re-purchasing it month after month, refrigerating the product is simply not necessary. Again, CBD can last for a couple years without any loss to its potency, assuming you keep it out of the sun and safe from the open air.

Are There Any Problems with Refrigerating CBD Oil?

What if you want to keep your CBD oil in the fridge anyway, just to be extra cautious?

While there’s nothing necessarily wrong with refrigerating your CBD, you should be aware that doing so will cause some CBD oils to thicken. This, in turn, can make dosing more difficult.

For this reason, you may wish to find a cool, dark storage space that isn’t your refrigerator, assuming you plan on using your CBD products within that two-year window.

What About Freezing CBD Oil?

Some CBD users actually freeze their CBD oil. Again, this might make sense if you’re stocking up, building a surplus of CBD that will last you more than a year. Otherwise, it’s just not needed.

And here again, there may be some unintentional side effects to sticking your CBD in the freezer. Extremes in temperature can affect the consistency and viscosity of CBD, particularly when there are other oils (like coconut oil) included in the mix. This can lead to difficulties with proper, accurate dosing.

If you do freeze your CBD oil, you may notice that it looks a little cloudy when you retrieve it. Don’t panic! This doesn’t mean the quality of the product has been affected in any way. We simply recommend letting it sit at room temperature for a few hours before you use it.

What if I’ve Already Opened My CBD?

If you have a jar of pickles, or perhaps a jar of olives, you can store it at room temperature right up until you open the jar. At that point, it becomes necessary to refrigerate in order to ensure freshness. Does CBD work the same way?

Not necessarily, though opening your CBD oil can abbreviate its shelf life. Assuming you store it in a cool, dark place, even an opened CBD container can last for a good six months. But if you need it to last even longer, that’s when you may want to consider refrigerating it.
