Can CBD help with Headache Pain

CBD has been put forward as a safe, holistic remedy for all kinds of pain and physical discomfort. This includes relief for headaches, including persistent migraines. If you’re a regular headache sufferer, you know how debilitating it can be. As such, you may have some questions about using CBD to improve your quality of life.

As of yet, there is fairly limited research into the use of CBD to treat headache pain. What research does exist is fairly promising, however, and suggests that CBD may be a great alternative to pharmaceutical interventions.

What Does the Research Say?

So what exactly does the research say about using CBD to treat headache pain?

There are a couple of studies worth noting. The first is a study published in the Pharmacology journal in 2016, which found that more than a third of all migraine sufferers respond favorably to therapeutic doses of CBD.

Additionally, research presented at the European Academy of Neurology’s Congress in 2017 found that CBD can be effective in reducing the frequency of migraine headaches as well as the intensity.

While there’s still more research needed, the early indicators all suggest CBD as a very promising migraine treatment option.

How Does CBD Help Treat Headache Pain?

Now let’s take a closer look at the science itself: How exactly does CBD help remedy headache pain and migraines?

One possibility that scientists have put forward is that CBD reduces nerve pain by binding to the glycine receptors in the brain. The glycine receptors control the transmission of signals between different nerve cells. By disrupting these signals, CBD can effectively lessen the amount of pain the body experiences.

It’s also important to note that migraine headaches may sometimes be triggered by anxiety, stress, or insufficient rest… all of which may be effectively treated with the use of CBD.

Is Using CBD as a Headache Remedy Safe?

There’s evidence to suggest that CBD can be an effective headache remedy… but is it safe?

Here it’s important to remember that CBD, unlike THC, does not produce a “high” or any other psychoactive effects. This makes it a much safer option, as it will not impair thinking. In fact, CBD tends to have a naturally calming effect on the nervous system, meaning the experience of taking CBD tends to be very mild and tolerable for most users.

While we do recommend checking with your doctor, and being careful with your dosage, CBD can generally be considered a safe, holistic option for treating headache pain.

How Can I Use CBD to Treat Headaches?

As you think about using CBD to address headache pain, here are a few suggestions that we’d recommend.

  • Think about using oral vs. topical CBD. You might assume that the best way to take CBD for headache pain is to take it orally… and often, that’s true! But you may also want to try a topical application, which may help to reduce swelling and other migraine symptoms that are associated with inflammation.
  • Get the dosage right. If you’re new to CBD, you’ll probably want to begin with a lower dose. You can always build your dosage incrementally, as needed, but make sure you give your body time to rest before you evaluate your need for a higher dose.
  • Seek high-quality CBD products. To ensure the best-quality CBD, always make sure it’s made and grown in the USA. We also recommend buying from trusted, reputable CBD providers. (Don’t buy from, say, a gas station or convenience store.)
  • Ask your doctor. It never hurts to ask your physician, especially if you’re currently receiving other treatments to manage your headache pain.
