Does CBD Affect Men and Women Differently?

CBD affects different people in varied ways. There are a number of factors that can explain these variances. For example, your metabolism may have a big impact on how your body absorbs and uses CBD. Likewise, if you are a frequent CBD user, you may experience different effects than someone who has never used CBD before, or who uses it infrequently.

Still another point of distinction? Your sex. Simply put, men and women are dissimilar in a number of ways, including their genetic makeup, their hormonal activity, and more. As such, it stands to reason that men and women could have varying experiences with CBD products.

Yes, CBD Affects Men and Women Differently

As with so many CBD-related topics, there is limited evidence available to us from the scientific community… but what evidence we do have paints a pretty clear picture: CBD can have a very different impact on men than it does on women.

Why would this be the case? The most likely explanation is that men and women have different genetic makeups and hormonal distributions; on a chemical level, they are just different. And men and women also have variations in their respective endocannabinoid systems, which can also have a big impact on how CBD affects them.

Other differences, such as general shape, size, and metabolism, may also help to explain why men and women have divergent experiences with CBD products.

Women and CBD

A study from Yale School of Medicine pinpoints the key distinction: “Women seem to have more exposure from the same dose of CBD,” the study confirms. “Preliminary data suggest that women reach peak concentrations more quickly and reach higher concentrations than men.”

Because of these findings, the study suggests that CBD may actually be even more beneficial for women than it is for men, especially with regard to common issues such as insomnia and anxiety.

It should also be noted that a woman’s estrogen levels can have a direct impact on her CBD effects. Specifically, the menstrual cycle can influence the effects and strength of a CBD dose. Women can expect the most potent CBD effects a day or two before ovulation, when hormone levels are at their peak. (Some CBD proponents argue that this could be positive news for women who are interested in using hemp-derived products to ease the effects of their menstrual cramps.)

Given the potential link between CBD and hormones, some women may also experience positive effects on their sex drive and their overall sexual satisfaction. Again, these effects may vary depending on menstrual cycle and other factors, and there is no guarantee of efficacy across the board.

Men and CBD

The scientific literature suggests that women experience CBD more acutely… so what does that mean for men? Generally speaking, men usually experience CBD with a bit less potency, and may also be slightly more likely to experience ill effects, though side effects are still pretty rare.

With that said, there are certainly some silver linings. For example, men are more likely than women to experience high blood pressure in their daily lives, which can in turn be an indicator of heart disease or stroke. According to one study, CBD may provide some people with a reduction in their resting blood pressure.

It should also be noted that some men who take CBD to help with erectile dysfunction may experience some benefits. Erectile dysfunction has many potential causes, but for many men, it is essentially a psychological problem. Due to the anti-anxiety effects that CBD could provide, there may also be therapeutic benefits for men whose erectile dysfunction is primarily a matter of performance anxiety.
