Stress is an everyday reality for each and every one of us. We experience stress in the workplace. We can become stressed out by relationships… even healthy ones! We may get stressed out sitting in traffic, checking our bank account, or processing the daily headlines.
While stress can’t be avoided, it can be managed in a healthy and constructive way. One potential option is to use CBD. Many people swear by the stress-busting properties of CBD, but what does the science actually say? Is there any legitimacy to the claims that CBD is a natural, effective stress reliever?
CBD and Stress: An Overview
On a purely anecdotal level, many regular CBD users will tell you that taking CBD instills a sense of calmness, which in turn can mitigate stress.
The scientific research is still in its nascent stage, but some promising studies indicate that CBD can help with the management of certain symptoms, including:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Panic Disorders
- Obsessive-compulsive Disorders (OCD)
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD)
More specifically, what these studies suggest is that CBD can dampen the body’s stress responses and alleviate chronic stress, which can in turn blunt the impact of some of these other stress-based mental health disorders.
What the Science Says: A Closer Look
Again, it should be emphasized that scientific research regarding CBD is relatively new, and relatively limited. Further testing is needed before we can provide a robust scientific defense of CBD as a clinical agent.
With that said, the studies we do have are all very encouraging, and affirm that CBD may indeed be a powerful remedy for stress. Consider a body of research from 2020, which synthesized the findings from 76 independent studies on stress and mental health. This research found overwhelming evidence to suggest that CBD is a promising treatment for anxiety and stress, though the research also called for further study to confirm.
A separate study, also dated to 2020, investigated the effects of CBD on a small sample of 15 participants. The study’s summary notes that the “results identify potential mechanisms of CBD for a range of conditions associated with altered memory processing, including Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder.”
So where does all of this leave us? We can’t say conclusively that CBD is a remedy for stress, but we can certainly point to some promising research. The implication is that CBD may affect different people in different ways, but may be a worthwhile path to stress management, so long as you choose your CBD products carefully, dose appropriately, and monitor your results.
Choosing the Right CBD Products
As you look for CBD oil drops or other products to help with stress management, there are a few precautions to keep in mind:
- It’s always a good idea to check with your doctor first, especially if you currently take medications and worry about potential interactions.
- Remember that CBD is not a replacement for clinical intervention, especially if you have a serious, diagnosable mental health condition.
- Always seek CBD products that are sourced in the USA and distributed to known, reputable brands.
- If you’re new to CBD, start off with a smaller dose, moving up to a larger quantity if necessary.
Other Ways to Keep Stress at Bay
You may find that CBD is most effective when paired with other stress management techniques. Some options to consider include:
- Meditation, including CBD-assisted meditation
- Regular workouts
- Time spent soaking up sun and fresh air
- Journaling
- Self-care, including warm baths, massages, or just quiet time
- Creative pursuits, including writing, painting, drawing, dancing or singing
- Time spent practicing active gratitude
- Guided breathing exercises
