Feeling Nauseous? CBD Could Provide Help

Most of us know what it’s like to feel nauseous sometimes, whether due to a stomach bug, over-exertion, or simply eating too much. Some of us actually live with regular and ongoing nausea, perhaps due to medical treatments or chronic conditions. If you live with nausea, chances are you’ve considered holistic remedies like CBD. The question is, can CBD help alleviate the symptoms of nausea? Or is that just a myth?

As with many CBD-related topics, the research is still fairly nascent, too limited for us to say anything sweeping or unequivocal. What’s more, the research concerning CBD and nausea tends to focus specifically on those whose nausea stems from chemotherapy and other cancer treatments, which is hardly a representative sample of the population.

With all of that said, there are some promising signs that using CBD may provide relief for your nausea symptoms. Let’s take a closer look.

What Does the Science Say?

Again, it’s important to stress that most of the research surrounding CBD and nausea is focused on those undergoing cancer treatment. This makes sense; after all, vomiting and nausea are among the most common and most extreme side effects of chemotherapy.

One of the most frequently cited CBD studies is from 2011 and involves animal research. The study confirms that CBD may help with nausea, specifically because of the way it interacts with serotonin receptors. (As you may know, serotonin is the hormone that regulates your mood and general sense of wellbeing.)

As for studies involving humans, there is some compelling research from 2016, which found that medicines containing both CBD and THC helped alleviate nausea in chemotherapy patients. Be advised that there is some debate as to whether the primary benefit came from CBD, THC, or the combination of the two. However, it’s also worth noting that this cannabis-based treatment was found to be much more helpful in alleviating nausea than more traditional pharmaceuticals.

One more note: The American Cancer Society actually lists cannabis-based medications as alternative treatment options for patients who experience chemotherapy-induced nausea, and who find that more traditional medications don’t offer results. Cannabis is also noted for its ability to stimulate appetite in patients who haven’t been eating enough.

All of this suggests that, while CBD is not an FDA-approved nausea treatment, there is certainly some openness to the notion that it could be helpful.

Tips for Using CBD to Address Nausea:

If you’re dealing with nausea and are ready to give CBD a try, where does any of this leave you?

First and foremost, we would always recommend talking with your doctor, letting them know that you’re interested in some alternative nausea remedies and asking whether they think CBD is right for you.

Second, be aware that, since CBD is not technically FDA-approved for treating nausea, there are no official dosing recommendations. We would recommend starting with a very small dose to see what effect it has, and incrementally working your way toward higher doses as necessary.

We’d also recommend that you try different CBD tinctures, or other products, to find the strain that works best for you. For nausea relief, it may be worthwhile to consider full-spectrum products, which contain incredibly small amounts of THC. The clinical research suggests that THC, working in conjunction with CBD, could enhance the anti-nausea effects.

As always, make sure you select CBD products that are made and distributed by a reputable company with a proven track record. Third-party test results can help confirm that you’re buying good CBD products from a trustworthy company. With any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Asé Pure Naturals.
