How CBD May Provide Support for Your Mental Health

Ever since it became federally legal in 2018, hemp-derived CBD has been a popular choice among those seeking natural, holistic ways to improve their mental health. After all, unlike THC, CBD doesn’t produce a psychoactive “high.” And, while the scientific research is still in its nascent stage, there is plenty of preliminary evidence to suggest that CBD may be a safe and effective way to promote mental wellbeing.

How Does CBD Affect Mental Health?

But how exactly does CBD impact your mental health? The answer has everything to do with the endocannabinoid, a complex cell-signaling system that helps to regulate a number of core functions. These include your mood, your appetite, your sleep, your experiences with chronic pain, and more.

CBD has been shown to interact with the endocannabinoid system to further regulate these functions. As a result, many people who use CBD say that it has provided them with physical health benefits (such as decreased inflammation or a relief from chronic pain), or with mental health benefits (like reduced stress and anxiety).

Indeed, while it’s important to reiterate that the scientific research remains limited, there is at least some evidence showing that CBD can promote mental wellness in more ways than one. Consider some examples.

Treating Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems in the country; in fact, studies indicate that close to 20 percent of U.S. adults are affected by an anxiety disorder. There is some initial research suggesting that taking CBD can help mitigate some of the symptoms of anxiety, and specifically that it can be an effective way to manage social anxiety disorders. Further research confirms the potential of CBD as a remedy for panic disorders, generalized anxiety, and even obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is a type of anxiety.

Addressing Depression

In addition to anxiety, depression is one of the most common mental health concerns in the country. Again, the statistics are sobering: It’s been estimated that more than 17 million U.S. adults struggle with clinical depression each year.

While psychotherapy and pharmaceutical interventions have long been the norm for treating depression, CBD has really risen in popularity, especially among those who want a more natural and holistic alternative. Specifically, there’s evidence showing how CBD plays on serotonin receptors.

Managing PTSD

Still another common mental health disorder is post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. About six percent of U.S. adults have this condition, which can manifest as nightmares, intrusive thoughts, or avoidance of triggering/traumatizing activities.

Again, clinical research is fairly limited, but there is some promising data to show how CBD can be a useful tool for managing the effects of PTSD.

Improving Sleep

When you can’t sleep at night, it can impact your mood, your energy level, and more. Additionally, sleeplessness can exacerbate other mental health problems, including the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

As such, it’s worth noting that many CBD users have claimed amazing benefits related to the quality of their sleep. This is promising news both for those who struggle with insomnia and especially for those who have other mental health concerns.

Using CBD to Address Mental Health Concerns

As you consider using CBD to promote mental wellbeing, there are a few general safety tips that we’d offer.

  • Remember to talk with your doctor first, ensuring that you’re a good candidate for safe and successful CBD therapy.
  • Keep in mind that CBD can augment and enhance the results of psychotherapy but isn’t necessarily an alternative to receiving psychological treatment.
  • If you’re new to CBD, start with a smaller dosage. You can always work your way up to a larger dosage if needed.
  • Be sure you seek high-quality CBD products from reputable sellers. Specifically, seek CBD products that are made in the United States.
