JARED FENSTERMACHER
Adaptive Endurance Athlete • Mental Health Advocate • Hand Cyclist • Trail Conqueror • Purpose-Driven Leader • Husky Enthusiast • Adventure Lover
Some people wake up and choose discipline. Jared woke up one day and had to rebuild his entire life.
That’s a different kind of strength — forged in moments no one sees.
Before his accident, Jared’s identity was movement: collegiate sports, cycling, adventure, pushing limits.
Then, in 2016, a life-altering accident left him paralyzed from a spinal cord injury, broke both humeri, and forced him to completely rethink what was possible. The mental and emotional toll was immense — grief, identity shifts, and the challenge of living in a body that no longer obeyed the way it once did.
But Jared didn’t just survive the transition.
He transformed inside of it.
He found purpose again — through movement, discipline, community, grit, and a belief that life doesn’t end when circumstances change. And he lives fully today, embracing joy, gratitude, and adventure.
Grit in Motion: Discipline, Dopamine & Healing
Discipline is about showing up even when your mind wants to hide.
For Jared, it’s taking one action at a time:
- Training sessions on his hand cycle
- Multi-day adaptive rides covering hundreds of miles
- Hiking and technical adaptive maneuvers in Grit Freedom Chairs
- Mountain summits, steep climbs, and Appalachian Trail treks
These small daily choices create momentum, resilience, and a release of dopamine — the brain’s signal: “You’re still alive. You’re still capable. Keep going.”
For someone rebuilding life after paralysis, this is more than fitness. It’s therapy.
It’s mental health.
It’s purpose in motion.
Endurance, Adventure, and Adaptive Achievement
Jared’s list of accomplishments is staggering:
- Cross-country adaptive cycling: Jared began a coast-to-coast ride in 2016 to raise money for For Pete’s Sake Cancer Foundation. Despite being hit by a truck 18 days into the journey, he finished the ride years later, covering more than 1,200 miles post-injury.
- Rim-to-Rim & multi-day rides: He routinely completes hundreds of miles over 2–3 day adaptive cycling events, demonstrating endurance few able-bodied athletes could match.
- Hand cycling excellence: His hand cycle, valued over $20,000, enables feats impossible without adaptive equipment — a privilege not every athlete has.
- McAfee Knob summits: He has conquered this iconic Appalachian Trail peak six times in a wheelchair, even sliding himself to the edge for the classic feet-dangling photo.
- Adaptive hiking & trail navigation: Using his Grit Freedom Chair and support from teammates, Jared navigates steep terrain, stairs, and boulders, often requiring ropes, lifts, and careful coordination.
Every mile, every summit, every ride requires resources, support, and community, which Jared emphasizes are essential for adaptive athletes.
Living Fully: Huskies, Hunting, and Joy
Jared’s story is also about living life fully:
- He loves huskies, owns two, and takes them on adventures often.
- He still enjoys rifle deer hunting, often using ATVs and Can-Am vehicles to access terrain, showing that life after paralysis can still be fun and active.
- Titan, his service dog, is a constant companion, supporting him physically and emotionally on rides, hikes, and daily life.
Through all of this, Jared maintains an attitude of gratitude, celebrating every opportunity to move, explore, and inspire.
Mental Health, Purpose, and Inspiration
Paralysis is a massive life transition. It is emotional, overwhelming, and life-changing.
People see the summits and miles, but rarely the daily challenges:
- Loss of bladder control and constant care
- Involuntary muscle contractions (clonus) and muscle tightness
- Learning to walk, hike, and maneuver in a wheelchair with assistance
- The mental struggle of redefining identity
Jared doesn’t hide from this reality — he embraces it, using purpose, movement, and gratitude to rebuild confidence, resilience, and hope.
His philosophy:
“When you stop moving, you stop healing.
When you find purpose, you start rising.
When you embrace gratitude, joy multiplies.”
Upcoming Races & Goals
Jared continues to push boundaries:
- Swamp Classic – January 2026
- Valley of the Sun – February 2026
- Potential Ironman
- Potential Spartan Race
- Endless adaptive endurance treks, hand cycling rides, and mountain adventures
Each race, each ride, each summit is a declaration: “Limitations are temporary. Possibility is endless.”
Why Jared Matters — To All of Us
In a world where adaptive athletes are often told limitations instead of opportunity, Jared reminds the fitness community what discipline truly is:
- The courage to show up
- The courage to rebuild
- The courage to refuse the role of victim
- The courage to say, “Watch me.”
He embodies Asé Pure Naturals’ values:
Movement is essential for mental, physical, and spiritual health.
Community and support are non-negotiable.
Purpose drives resilience.
Gratitude sustains it all.
Jared Fenstermacher isn’t just an adaptive athlete. He’s an everyday hero, proving that discipline, purpose, movement, and joy can rewrite what’s possible.
